The quarantine guide to holidaying like the super-rich

For those who crave such insider knowledge, but don’t plan on cramming tens of thousands into their annual vacation, Maury has some advice. She suggests investing in local guides (say a prominent Egyptologist for your first trip to the pyramids) and talking to those in the know, like the hotel concierge or hotel manager.

If you’re still craving some of the trappings of super-rich travel, then how about booking the superior cabin on a cruise line’s new yacht or reserving a seat on a luxury semi-private jet? The latter is available through Aero, a service which was first trialled in 2019 and now flies families to Geneva, Milan and Nice via direct flights through private terminals for £1,200 return per passenger.

Uma Subramanian, chief executive of Aero, says its customers get “80% of the value of private jet travel for 20% of the cost”. They can save up to four hours of hassle at the airport, avoiding paperwork-laden check-in queues (typical of post-Covid travel) and the slalom of duty-free aisles.

There are plenty of other ways you can don the super-rich costume on your next luxury vacation. For total immersion, try the “sky’s the limit” options. Or, if your budget is a little less stratospheric, our “upgrade” options will still be luxurious enough.

Fancy a private yacht?

The ideal upgrade: board a small cruise ship

From Scenic to Ponant, many cruise lines are launching superyachts. An option with relative exclusivity (it has a capacity of 100 passengers) is a trip on the Emerald Azzurra from Emerald Cruises. Book an owner’s suite and you will have a private terrace to enjoy the view of each new port and a large living room where you will be served canapes before dinner every day.

And where is better suited to sample the lifestyles of the rich and famous than the French and Italian Rivieras? An eight-night trip from Nice to Rome includes stops in the seaside town of Menton on the French Riviera, a beach at Portoferraio on Elba Island, and wine tasting in the Corsican countryside.

How to do: From £10,490 pp, staying in an Owner’s Suite (0808 271 3972; emeraldcruises.co.uk).
