January 9, 2022 – Several new Zagreb hypermarkets and supermarkets have popped up in the capital over the past two months, with new players in the game.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, during the months of November and December of last year Konzum, Lidl, Kaufland, Plodine and Pevex opened several new hypermarkets and supermarkets in Zagreb, and when you add the stores that Studenac, Stanic , Tommy and other retail chains have also opened in other parts of the country during the same period in 2021, there are around twenty newly opened locations for the purchase of various consumer goods.

Although statistical confirmation of the assessment that Croatian trade is experiencing a new round of expansion is still awaited, the director of the consultancy firm Colliers for Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vedrana Likan, said to Jutarnji list that the expansion of Croatian trade in consumer goods is well and truly underway, as reported in previous Colliers analyzes.

Vedrana Likan also drew attention to the trend of opening new stores in smaller tourist centers and destinations due to the further expected growth in tourist arrivals and consumption in 2022, adding two other factors that have contributed to the further expansion of national retailers offering food and other consumer goods.

The first of those two factors, at least according to her, is the entry into the domestic market of Italy’s very popular economy store, Eurospin, and the second is the increase in loans to banks.

If we look at the fact that food brands like Konzum, Lidl or Kaufland have had the most activity in terms of opening new stores, then the influence of the appearance of Eurospin is visible, which has opened fifteen supermarkets in Croatia in the first year of its presence here alone.

In addition to this, in some other cases, foreign capital has also entered the Croatian retail scene, which has also contributed to investments in the expansion of the commercial network, ” said the director of Colliers for the Croatia, adding that it was not surprising that commercial banks are ready to lend new investments in trade and see the possibility of making money on such projects.
