Larry, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2021. He was born in Lake Linden, Michigan on December 14, 1942 to Raymond and Ann Monette. Moved to a growing San Jose, California with his family at the age of 4, he attended local schools and competed in wrestling and basketball in San Jose High School. Larry served in the United States Army in Germany, returned to San Jose State to earn a degree in chemistry, and worked in the chemical industry for several years. He had a number of good friends from his high school and college years that he kept in touch with. He also received a graduate degree in agriculture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a doctorate. in Soil Chemistry from UC Davis.
Always calm and concerned about safety, Larry was hired by the Santa Clara Fire Department in 1982 as one of the first hazardous materials specialists working for a fire department. Larry’s job included emergency response, inspections, and the development of fire and building codes, most notably with the California Fire Chiefs Association’s Division of Fire Prevention Officers. After his retirement, he served for several years as President of the Santa Clara City Section of the Association of Retired Public Employees (RPEA).
Larry enjoyed working with wood, planting in the garden, and sports and activities with his children. Yosemite, Pacific Grove, Croatia, Italy, and Canada were favorite places for family trips, hikes, and adventures. He was a great baker of Christmas cookies and pies and passed his skills on to his children and granddaughter Eva. Above all, Larry was a kind, supportive and considerate man with a wonderful sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nora, his daughter Katie and her husband Mark, and his son Dave and his wife Sheila. Beloved grandfather of Eva and Wes D’Amico and of Reid and Rose Monette. His niece Kathie Lopez (Ted) was like a sister. He was also a beloved uncle, great-uncle and great-great-uncle and brother-in-law of Edith Monette. His parents, his sister Shirley Vail and his brothers Raymond and Albert predeceased him.
A celebration of Larry’s life will take place in 2022. We would like to express our thanks for the great support from Adrienne Uyenco and care from Pricila Vitela, and the staff at Palm Villas, Palo Alto Commons and Pathways during our family’s trip. with Alzheimer’s disease.
