Nine Aston Villa players on declining contracts ahead of major transfer decisions
Jack Grealish, Tyrone Mings, John McGinn, Matt Targett and Ezri Konsa – five Aston Villa first team mates who have been rewarded with improved contracts given their good form.
Those mentioned represent the core of Dean Smith’s starting XI, with all five set to have their say for Villa’s upcoming 2021/22 season.
It’s Konsa and record buy Emiliano Buendia, who have the longest contracts at Villa until 2026, with contracts for Grealish, McGinn, Ollie Wakins, Targett, Jacob Ramsey, Matty Cash and Morgan Sanson until 2025.
The agreements that expire in three years in 2024 are those of Mings, Bertrand Traoré, Emi Martinez, Wesley, Marvelous Nakamba and Keinan Davis.
But what about those members of Smith’s team whose deals dwindle with some key decisions to be made in that transfer window and the next?
New signing Ashley Young signed a one-year contract at Villa Park last month with the club remaining wary of whether they have the option of extending if the 36-year-old impresses.
Elsewhere, Conor Hourihane and Kortney Hause’s contracts are due to expire in less than a year in June 2022, while Villa has the option of extending it for another year.
Those with less than two years on contract (2023) are: Douglas Luiz, Anwar El Ghazi, Trezeguet, Frederic Guilbert, Jed Steer and Lovre Kalinic, the Croatian joining Hadjuk Split for another season on loan.
Kalinic, 31, has revealed how Villa intends to sell him rather than loan him out knowing his value will drop again as he enters the final year of his contract next summer.
He said: “The negotiations have been long, they started a few months ago, Aston Villa postponed until the end of the European Championship, they were planning to sell me somewhere.
“But my thoughts and wishes were only directed to Hajduk and, in the end, we were able to agree to cooperate for another year.”
