Dean Smith will hold his press conference around 9:30 am Friday morning, just hours after Emi Martinez and Douglas Luiz concluded their World Cup qualifying action in South America.

Martinez is expected to start for Argentina against Peru tomorrow at 12:30 am UK time, while an hour later Douglas is expected to be among the substitutes as Brazil host Uruguay in Manaus.

Head coach Smith is yet to decide whether the two will play for Aston Villa against Wolves on Saturday, knowing Martinez and Douglas are not expected to land in Birmingham until tea time tomorrow.

Smith, however, threw Martinez into the win over Everton upon returning from Croatia last month. However, given the 10-hour flights via private jets, a decision has yet to be made regarding the couple’s involvement this weekend.

Elsewhere, Marvelous Nakamba returned to Birmingham last night and will join his teammates at Bodymoor Heath today for a light session.

Bertrand Traoré, meanwhile, contracted a thigh injury in preparation for Burkina Faso’s brace against Djibouti. In light of Traore’s injury, here’s a summary of Villa’s treatment chart ahead of Wolves this weekend with key decisions yet to be made.

Leon Bailey

Injury: Quad (thigh)

Target return date: October 16 against the wolves

What we know: Bailey put a strain on his quadriceps as he hammered the third goal against Everton last month, striking it forcing him to retire after his brilliant 20-minute cameo.

What Dean Smith said: “I hope he starts training during the international break and is ready for Wolves.”

Bertrand traore

Injury: Quad (thigh)

Target return date: October 16 against the wolves

What we know: Traore sustained a thigh injury while on international duty and did not make the two matches for Burkina Faso despite flying to his homeland. Tomorrow we will know the severity of this injury.

Target return date: October 16 against the wolves

What we know: Sanson was forced to quit after 42 minutes in the Carabao Cup loss to Chelsea on September 22. Sanson posted on Instagram that he is back to grass training at Bodymoor Heath.

What Dean Smith said: “We don’t think it’s going to be bad, he actually continued for a couple of minutes after that which proves to me that it’s not bad. He was building up his playing minutes so it’s really frustrating for him. but it will only be a small step back, that’s for sure.

Carney Chukwuemeka

Injury: Unspecified

Target return date: October 16 against the wolves

What we know: Chukwuemeka was not named to the bench for Villa’s loss to Spurs with Jaden Philogene-Bidace promoted instead, despite the winger playing 45 minutes for the Under-23s on Friday. Chukwuemeka was called up by England’s Under-19s but, once again, failed to triple-squad in Marbella against France, Mexico and Belgium.

What Dean Smith said: “He had a major knee injury which is normally nine months. We never like to put a deadline on the injuries, but that’s the average time to come back. Some come back sooner, some come back later.”
