International review: Odubeko scores as Irish U21s claim victory
Somewhere else, Ben Johnson helped the England U21s take a big step towards qualification for the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship final with a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic.
Johnson made his second appearance for the young international side on Friday, having made his March debut as a left-back in Lee Carsley’s side’s victory at Stadio Střelecký ostrov.
The game between first and second place in Group G was won by England thanks to goals from Emile Smith Rowe of Arsenal and Jacob Ramsey of Aston Villa in each half, while the hosts fought back thanks to the late arrival of Daniel Fila.
Johnson played the full 90 minutes for England in the game, continuing his superb season for club and country.
The Young Lions now need four points from their three remaining matches to reach Euro 2023. Johnson and his team-mates top Group G on goal difference, having leveled the points with the Czechs, but played two less matches.
At full senior international level, Nikola Vlasic made one appearance on the bench for Croatia as they lost 3-0 at home to Austria.
Vlašić was introduced in the 58th minute in Friday’s game, but the visiting Austrians had already done the wrong thing. Former Hammer Marko Arnautovic scored in the first half before Augsburg’s Michael Gregoritsch and Bayern Munich’s Marcel Sabitzer added the other two in the second half.
The loss to Austria puts Croatia bottom of 2022-23 UEFA Nations League Group 1A, albeit after just one game.
Goalkeeper on loan Alphonse Areole was an unused substitute for France in the same UEFA Nations League group, as they fell to a surprise 2-1 home loss to Denmark.
