Four of the best European hotels for an autumn vacation in the sun

The kids are back to school, the weather has taken a cooler turn … summer is definitely over, although given the humidity of August you would be forgiven for having it completely missed. Certainly, given the travel chaos that has kept many people on their soil during the school holidays, there are many who feel ready for a real vacation: a warm, sunny spot by the sea, perhaps with a cocktail bar nearby. Fortunately, there are places in Europe where this is still the case, even until October. Here we give you four of our favorites.
Villa Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Great for … Bond’s Lair vibes
Built into the side of a cliff, with breathtaking views of the Adriatic from every room, this place exudes Bond film elegance. The building dates back to the 1960s, although it was completely modernized a decade ago (the contemporary design is all glass and clean lines). It is located close to Dubrovnik: the ancient city walls are a short walk or free shuttle ride away – although it is best to spend sunny days sunbathing on the hotel’s private rocky beach or in use the spa. The hospitality is world class and the intimate and gourmet restaurant, Pjerin, is a must for romantic dinners. We also loved having lunch on the terrace of the Al Fresco Giardino bar, where the air is loaded with the scent of pine and sea salt.
Stella likes: Watch the sun set over the old town from the rooftop prosciutto and wine bar.
Moving : Take the boat to Lokrum, a wild and unspoiled island and nature reserve, 600m from Dubrovnik – it served as a place of Game Of Thrones. It’s home to rabbits and peacocks, and the view from the top of the fort is worth the boat trip. The hotel can also offer excursions, including wine tours along the Peljesac peninsula, visits to oyster farms and horseback riding in local villages.
